Remembering Lili Elbe on the 95th Anniversary of Her Death

On September 12, we commemorate the anniversary of Lili Elbe’s death.
Many people know her from the film The Danish Girl, but there are often overlooked details beyond the story portrayed on screen: Before becoming one of the first known people to undergo gender-affirming surgery in 1930, she was an accomplished Danish landscape painter. She chose the surname “Elbe” herself, as a tribute to the river in Dresden, where she began a new chapter of her life.
Her grave at Dresden’s Trinitatisfriedhof cemetery was removed in the 1960s and only restored in 2016 thanks to donations. As TIAM, we have taken on the responsibility of caring for this memorial. To ensure its long-term preservation, we rely on annual donations.
