Empowerment!
Empowerment and Social Participation for Trans*, Inter*, and Non-Binary (tin*) People in Saxony
From January 2023 to December 2024, TIAM had the opportunity to implement the project “Empowerment and Social Participation for Trans*, Inter*, and Non-Binary (tin*) People in Saxony.” The empowerment offerings for tin* individuals ranged from workshops to a German-Polish exchange in autumn 2024, as well as networking meetings for tin* groups from self-help and/or activism.
Project Description
The project aimed to promote greater social participation for trans*, inter*, and non-binary (tin*) people in Saxony. It sought to strengthen not only the individual resilience and empowerment of tin* participants but also the sense of community, mutual support, and connectedness among participants. By doing so, the project also aimed to improve coping with minority stress.
Where tin* individuals face barriers to access, the project worked to facilitate inclusion and participation. Special attention was given to the needs of multiply marginalized individuals: access to activities was made as easy as possible, and cooperation was sought with barrier-free and wheelchair-accessible venues to accommodate participants’ specific needs or requests.
The German-Polish exchange continued in 2024, building on the exchange held in 2022 in collaboration with Stowarzyszenie Kultura Równosci and the Krzyzowa Foundation. As a project taking place in a federal state bordering two countries, this initiative emphasized cooperation, mutual exchange, joint learning, and reciprocal support.
Another key focus was networking, supporting, and activating local self-help and activist tin* groups to strengthen political participation. Networking events were offered to allow these groups to connect, exchange ideas, and learn from each other. Only the community itself can articulate the political needs in Saxony and beyond; the project sought to provide space, time, and incentives for this.
Workshops emphasized empowerment most prominently, equipping participants with skills, confidence, and knowledge to advocate for themselves and their communities.
The project “Empowerment and Social Participation for trans*, inter*, and non-binary (tin*) People in Saxony” was funded by the Saxon State Ministry of Justice and for Democracy, Europe, and Equality (SMJ) of the Free State of Saxony. Measures were co-financed by members of parliament as part of the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.

Shaping the Future – Experiencing Gender Diversity
Model Project
From May 2020 to December 2024, TIAM had the opportunity to implement the project “Shaping the Future – Experiencing Gender Diversity.” The educational project focused on healthcare, support in child and youth services, and the counseling of non-binary, trans, and intersex individuals.
Project Description
Counseling and support for gender-diverse individuals is not typically included in standard pedagogical or healthcare training and is often overlooked. As a result, appropriate support can frequently only be provided in a very limited capacity. In child and youth services, this often leads to a lack of sensitivity toward non-binary, trans, and intersex individuals. Similarly, healthcare provision is frequently not prepared to meet the needs of people who do not fit the binary gender model.
Our goal is to expand knowledge about gender diversity and strengthen the practical skills of multipliers through education and networking. Our primary target group includes professionals in counseling, child and youth services, and healthcare. We aim to make the needs of people beyond the traditional gender norms visible and advocate for recognizing them as experts in their own experiences. Only then can they receive the appropriate care and support they need.
The specific needs of gender-diverse individuals form the basis for us to develop training programs for professionals in social services and healthcare. This aims to improve long-term knowledge and sensitivity regarding gender diversity.
Within the project, we seek to develop and strengthen appropriate counseling services for non-binary, trans, and intersex individuals, as well as a well-connected counseling network. Building on the principles of empowerment and the expertise derived from lived experience, we also aim to establish a peer counseling network. To achieve this, a new counseling concept will be created, disseminated, and implemented, with peer counselors being trained and supported throughout the process.
“Shaping the Future – Experiencing Gender Diversity” is a model project funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) within the framework of the federal program »Demokratie leben!«
